Chasing Perfection In Name Of The Right Thing To Do

As many of you will know we are currently in the process of recording our album. A few weeks ago we went into the studio to record Ben’s drum tracks, and he did a killer job, and next up was my guitars. I want to tell a quick story about where things are going and some challenges I have faced recently. Bear with me, I am going to be a little bit technical first, and then I will get to the point of this post, which I think is important for our community to know.

For the album we are using a technique called re-amping. The way this works is that Juan (our producer) gave me Ben’s recorded drums with a built-in click track and I have loaded them into my studio at home. There I am using a little box called a DI box that takes my guitar cable and has two outputs – one into my guitar amp and one which feeds the dry signal (the clean sound from the guitar itself) into the mixing desk. I then record both my guitar amp and the dry signal as I record each song. By recording the guitar amp I record a normal distorted guitar sound (which Ron can record bass along with later), and then in a week we will take the dry signal to Jaun’s studio (where we did the drums) and feed it into a perfectly set up and miced guitar amp and record it. This way I get to record my performances in my home studio, but the final sound is professionally recorded in Juan’s studio.

So…I started recording my guitars. When I do this I need to record four rhythm guitar tracks (two for me and two for Jim) for each song. When I record my goal is to get the perfect performance on each of the four guitar tracks. It takes time, a lot of perseverance, and practice, but it is worth it for an album we can all enjoy for years to come.

As I started ploughing through each of the tracks, I was most of the way through my guitars and then I noticed a glaring mistake. I had been using the click track (which is like a metronome) that Juan included with the drum recordings, but at times it was difficult to hear the click and as such in those parts it felt like my playing was less precise; particularly with the fast parts. The revelation I had, which I kicked myself about, was that I should have switched on my own click track synced with the one in Ben’s drums. This would make it much easier to play, and edit for that matter. Upon this realization later on a Wed night after three hours of recording, I laid on the floor in my wife’s office just saying fucking click track! over and over again to myself.

I knew this needed to be right though, so I blew away all of my work and started again. I switched on all the clicks and lo and behold delivered some much better performances. It was worth it.

Spin forward a week to tonight where I have pretty much all of my guitars done, and I am starting on Jim’s guitars. When I got into my studio to start recording, I noticed my guitar was way out of tune compared to my tuner. Interestingly, when we met on Saturday to rehearse before our show in Vallejo I also noticed that when I tuned to my guitar amp tuner my guitar was way out of tune too. It was as if my tuner in my home studio was tuning to a different pitch. Each of the strings were tuned correctly in relation to each other, but it seemed my low C string live was a lot deeper than my low C string when I was recording in the studio.

…and then I realized why, and I cracked open a beer to console myself.

For some ungodly reason my tuner in my studio has been set to 450hz and normal concert pitch is 440hz. In other words if you tune the bottom string on a guitar (in my case a C) to 450hz it will sound about a half-step higher in tone than if you tune it to the industry-standard-that-every-tuner-including-my-damn-tuner-despite-it-being-an-asshole pitch of 440hz…it sounds different.

Now I faced a dilemma. I had recorded pretty much everything again, but in 450hz instead of 440hz. While I could certainly record the album in this pitch, it would mean weirdly tuning all the other instruments, adjusting my vocals to this slightly different pitch, and it just didn’t sound as cool. My normal tuning sounded deep and fat; this sounded a little weaker. But there was another more important reason…

…”shit. I need to record it again” I grumbled into my Miller Lite.

When I started the Severed Fifth Recording Campaign and asked all of you wonderful folks to contribute your own hard-earned money to our recording fund, I based my platform on the premise of if we going to do this, we need to do it right. I promised all of you that I we will take your generosity and invest it wisely into the recording, and put out the best possible release that we can so we can bring change to an industry that is so broken. We had donations from over 70 people, from over 15 countries, and your generosity was clear statement of belief in Severed Fifth and what we are striving to achieve. Not only this, but this album is going to be at the heart of much of the work of our growing Street Team community – I owe Neil, Virgil, Adam, Zach, Che, Lyle, Mark and the many other people investing their effort in Severed Fifth the best possible performance I can deliver.

With this in mind I wiped my work and started again…in 440hz…with my click track loud and proud, and with a warmth that despite the frustration, if it wasn’t for the awesome Severed Fifth community believing in us, we wouldn’t be doing this in the first place. You all rock, and I will be damned if I don’t give you the absolute best I can give you. This is going to rock, friends… \m/

I just wanted to say a particularly huge thank you to two folks who really helped support Severed Fifth in a huge way today. Firstly, earlier today I did the weekly Severed Fifth videocast (see the recording here), and Noah Botimer contributed $101 to the Severed Fifth Recording Campaign! The reason it is $101 and not $100 is a little tongue-in-cheek competitiveness to beat James Sharp who contributed a mighty $100 a few weeks back. Today Noah now holds the record for the highest contribution of $101 – thanks so much!

If this wasn’t awesome enough I then saw that The OpenNMS Group contributed a whopping $500 to the recording campaign. This is an outstanding contribution, and I want to offer a huge thankyou! to Tarus Balog and co. there.

You folks are really helping to put Severed Fifth in an ideal position to really affect change in the music industry!

If you want to help contribute to the campaign, see the Severed Fifth Recording Campaign page!

I just wanted to post a quick update on the Severed Fifth Recording Campaign that we launched a week or so ago to appeal for you folks to help get us into a professional studio to re-record Nightmares By Design so we can get out there with the best possible album, and help change the music industry for the better. If this is all news to you, then be sure to check out the video for the full scoop and to contribute if you can!

Today we hit the $500 milestone in contributions from you awesome folks, but we need $5000 to get in the studio, so we have a long road yet to travel. Fortunately every penny counts and helps us to record an album that will represent free culture in the best possible light. Remember every single one of you who donates will get your name included in the album liner notes!

I just want to offer a special shout-out to Stephane Graber, David Barry, and Shawn Borton who have each donated $50 or more, and will be getting a signed picture of the band and a copy of the current Nightmares By Design demo on CD as a special thank you. Remember, there are various incentives on offer to encourage you to contribute, all explained on this page.

Thanks to everyone who contributes, and thanks in advance for those who are about to contribute – you rock! \m/

The Severed Fifth Recording Campaign: We Need Your Help!

A few weeks ago we sat down with one of our advisors for Severed Fifth and a strong supporter of the band who has been through the industry and played in a number of established acts. He said that he believes we have a real shot at making a difference both musically and in changing how the industry works with Severed Fifth, and he believes that our culture of giving the music away and building a community is right, but to compete in the existing music industry we need a professionally recorded album that stands up to the production standards of other professional bands. He gave us an important piece of advice. He felt that while Nightmares By Design is a great sounding demo, it doesn’t do the music justice. He believes we need to get in a professional studio to help our music really shine and get this train on the tracks.

He is right. We are all pleased with Nightmares By Design but it lacks the big roomy drum sound, thundering bass undertones, punchy vocals that you get when a singer is pushed by a recording engineer, and the sheen that a studio recording gets you. It also lacks the stunning performances of the new Severed Fifth live band. Nightmares By Design is a blueprint for a stunning professionally recorded album. Let’s make this happen, and let’s change the rules with it.

For us to change the music industry via Severed Fifth, and make us a great example of how Free Culture can work, we need an album recording that stands up against the latest Megadeth, the latest Iron Maiden, and the latest Slayer. We believe in the music, and we know we can do this, but we need your help to fund the recording. If we all contribute, we can do this.

How You Can Help

We need your help to contribute to the recording. We need $5000 to record. If 500 Severed Fifth fans donate just $10, we will nail it. If you can help we really want to say thankyou for your contribution, so we will print the name of everyone who contributes in the album liner notes, and list all of you in an article when we release. If you can afford more we have some additional perks:

  • For contributions of $50 or more – we will send you a signed photo of the band and a CD copy of Nightmares By Design.
  • For contributions of $100 or more – we will send you a Severed Fifth t-shirt, signed photo of the band and a CD copy of Nightmares By Design.
  • For contributions of $200 or more – we will send you a signed copy of the new album on CD, a Severed Fifth t-shirt, signed photo of the band and a CD copy of Nightmares By Design.
  • For contributions of $300 or more – We will dedicate a song to you at our next live show and send you the video of it, send you a signed copy of the new album on CD, a Severed Fifth t-shirt, signed photo of the band and a CD copy of Nightmares By Design.

For much of last week I was locked in the Severed Fifth studio laying down tracks for our new album, Nightmares By Design. While many of you joined me via the live stream, I just wanted to provide a quick update for those who didn’t get a chance to tune in, to get up to speed on where the albums stands today.

From Wednesday to Friday I did the bulk of the recording. I had already completed most of the drums (I just need to get in and tighten them up), so I started with the rhythm guitars. With eleven tracks to record, it took me about a day and half to get the rhythm guitars double tracked, and then I moved on to focus on the bass. With much of the bass completed, I added the acoustic guitars (of which there is a full acoustic song (Forgotten Heroes) and the end of Foretold Revelation), and as I drew into the end of Friday I had completed all the rhythm, acoustic and bass guitars for the full album.

Next up was to proof all the recordings and check that I didn’t need to perform any rhythm, acoustic, or bass overdubs…and everything sounded great. I then moved on to perform a very basic mix, and today I started laying down some vocals for some of the songs. The vocals are going to take a little bit longer as I have an idea in my head of how I want them to sound, and it will take a few takes to get them there, but good progress is being made. The vocals will mix a lot of singing and growling to offer a wide range of tones and textures across the album.

I am absolutely stoked with the progress I made this week and Nightmares By Design is off to a great start, and I can’t wait to continue onwards and get it completed. In addition to recording, the full band squeezed in two rehearsals on Wednesday evening and Saturday morning, as we march towards the stage to present a ripping Severed Fifth live show, and present all this new material. Finally, my pal Sonia Bass in New Zealand has started working on the cover art for the new album (she worked on the cover for my previous band Seraphidian’s Caged album) and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with.

So, to wrap up, great progress has been made and the album is sounding rocking! Before I finish up though, I just want to say a huge thank-you to all of you who joined me via the live recording stream – it was awesome to have you folks pumping me full of motivation while I was laying down all those riffs. We really do have an awesome Severed Fifth community, and long may it continue and long may we grow!

Rock and roll, friends, rock and roll. :-)

I am pleased to announce that the new Severed Fifth album due for release in Fall 2010 is called Nightmares By Design. It has been about five months in the works, and I am really pleased with it. I think it is a good album, a progression from Denied By Reign, and having jammed it with the new live band, the material is going to absolutely rip live.

We are all hugely excited about getting out there any taking these songs on the road, I can’t wait for you folks to check these songs out live.

The album packs in eleven tracks. They are:

  • Drill Down
  • Politicold
  • Fallout
  • Fight Philosophy
  • They Prey
  • Foretold Revelation
  • Machines Of War
  • Forgotton Heroes
  • End Of Days
  • The Blackening
  • Repent

There is a real mix of some fast tunes, some mid-paced chunky grooves, some bay area thrash mixed with more British metal, and an acoustic song to provide some more texture.

Don’t forget, this week I am streaming the live recording of the album online:

In one week, on Wed 11th Aug I will be heading into the Severed Fifth studio to record the second, as yet untitled, Severed Fifth album. Weighing in at 11 tracks and about 53 minutes long, it is going to be quite an undertaking to record. As with the last record, I will be recording all the guitars, bass, vocals, and drums, and then Jim Adams will come into the studio to lay down his lead parts.

In the same way that Severed Fifth is blazing the trail by releasing our music freely for our fans to enjoy, we will also be taking a step into open territory by streaming the entire five day recording session live on the Internet. Throughout the full five day period you will be able to see the recording process as it unfolds, hearing everything as it is laid down, and no doubt witnessing the frustration as I repeatedly fail to nail a riff. :-)

You will also be able to interact with me throughout the recording session: there is a text chat box next to the video stream, and I will be reading it throughout the session.

Here are the details:

  • WHEN: 11th – 15th August 2010 (first part of Sat 14th no recording as I will be at a band rehearsal)
  • TIMES: 10am – 6pm Pacific
  • WHERE: Get connected here!

I hope to see you there!

I am pleased to announce that from Wed 11th – Sun 15th August principle recording for the second Severed Fifth album will take place. Within the five day recording session, taking place primarily between 10am – 6pm Pacific I will be recording all the guitars, bass, and solos, and finalizing much of the drums, before going on to perform first-level mixes. The recording takes place in my home studio here in the Bay Area, California.

Not only is the recording session confirmed, but for the first time ever the entire recording process will be streamed live on the Severed Fifth UStream.tv channel where you can watch the recording and interact with me via the live web chat throughout the five-day session. This is a tremendous opportunity to take a glimpse into the studio, watch the recording process, and experience how a Severed Fifth album is put together.

Over the coming weeks I will be announcing the name of the album, the track listing, the release date, and providing more details of what to expect throughout the recording process. I will also be announcing some special competitions and prizes to celebrate the release of the eagerly awaited follow up to Denied By Reign.

So, put Wed 11th – Sun 15th August in your calendars and get ready for the Severed Fifth train to roll into the next station.
