Severed Fifth

I am hugely proud to announce that the new Severed Fifth album, Nightmares By Design is officially released, and available for free and in full on our Releases page. The entire album is licensed under a Creative Commons license; this means that we want you to enjoy it, share it with your friends, remix it, and otherwise enjoy the new album.

Nightmares By Design took about six months to complete, and I wrote, performed all the instruments, recorded, and produced it myself with additional leads by Jim Adams. The album was mastered by Dan Lynch and the album art was produced by Sonia Bass. Nightmares By Design weighs in at just over 54 minutes long and includes the following tracks:

This is a hugely important day for Severed Fifth; it marks the beginning of a new era for the band and the project. Our goal with Severed Fifth is to produce some awesome music and to try and change the dynamic of the music industry in the process; encouraging others to give their music away freely, and bring the fans closer to the band by building strong community. I am excited that we have an awesome album, an awesome live band, and an awesome and growing community to help spread the word of Severed Fifth.

Now Nightmares By Design is released, the real work begins. We need to tell the world about it, and I would like to encourage all of you to do the following:

1. Download – download and enjoy the album!
2. Share – let your friends know about Nightmares By Design and share it with them. Encourage them to share it with their friends too!
3. Tell – use Twitter/identi.ca/Facebook/YouTube etc and point people to

This is another video in our series this week in which we are releasing a new sneak peek every day from the forthcoming Severed Fifth album ‘Nightmares By Design‘. Today we are featuring the closing song on ‘Nightmares By Design‘, entitled Repent.

Repent kicks off with an instant groove before getting into a catchy thrashy riffing that those who have heard Repent have said feels reminicant of Judas Priest. We then pull back and the vocal kicks in, almost as if it is whispering in your ear, and then boom…we are in the main verse with a thick and chuggy mid-paced groove. We then kick into a big crowd pleaser of a chorus, ready for horns to be thrown to the air and screams of “repent!”.

This is another video in our series this week in which we are releasing a new sneak peek every day from the forthcoming Severed Fifth album ‘Nightmares By Design‘. The eleven track dose of Severed Fifth is released on 11th October 2010 and available free and in full from severedfifth.com. Today we are featuring *Drill Down’; a song design around the pit.

Drill Down is the story of a kid who signs up to join the military for all the wrong reason; believing it is one long “blowing shit up” party. When he gets posted to a war-torn country he soon realizes that he actually signed up for his own living hell.

Drill Down starts thrashing right away with a fast paced guitar attack and thundering double-bass drums. Soon it pulls back and the main verse wraps around the music, before the growls of the chorus lighting up the song like a Christmas tree. As it pulls into the finish line, Drill Down wraps with a big fat meaty riff to bang your head good and hard to.

End Of Days kicks off with an upbeat thrashy starter before settling down into a speedy mid-tempo verse. The song then transitions into a melodic but heavy pre-chorus before dropping down into a big sing-a-long chorus and then slamming into a breakdown and ultimately and driving outro riff that will exercise anyone’s neck muscles.

Today we are featuring a snippet from the opening track of the album; the eastern influenced Foretold Revelation.

Foretold Revelation is written about the lives of the ancient Egyptians and superstitions and rituals that drove their culture. The song kicks of Nightmares By Design with definitively eastern influenced sound, before kicking into a headbangingly heavy verse and then segueing into a rhythm and bass infused chorus. The song chugs along getting your toes, heads and brains tapped into Nightmares By Design before wrapping up with an awesomely emotive solo from Jim Adams.

Today we are featuring Politicold, a song that is increasingly becoming a fan favorite for people who have heard ‘Nightmares By Design‘ before it’s release.

Politicold is a song written about the mis-informed obsession with picking sides in politics, and how instead of uniting a people, this partisan nonsense divides the people. The song begins with firm and rhythmic groove before kicking in the verse and then pulls it back a little to groove even more for the chorus. The song then ratchets itself down a notch and transforms into a solid Severed Fifth jam, driving forward and then topping it off with us trading guitar solos and ending the song with melodic and heavy outro.

Every day this week we are going to be releasing a sneak peek from the new album ‘Nightmares By Design‘ to get you good people ready for an eleven track dose Severed Fifth, released on 11th October 2010 and available free and in full from severedfifth.com. Today we are going to kick off the series with the moshable thrasher Fallout.

Fallout tells the story of a military team who have been deployed to make peace in a wartorn country, when all of a sudden their nuclear responsiveness training needs to kick in when a nuclear attack is launched in the area. Fallout kicks in right away with a balls-to-the-wall thrash-o-rama before pulling back with a trademark Severed Fifth mid-paced thrash riff and the main verse. Before we know it we are into the chorus which pulls together a clean and growly conversation and the song breaks into a sound that is reminiscent of the sound of the fallout siren itself. The siren of course means one thing: a hell of a outro riff that will get you banging your head like crazy.
