Well, the recording kicked off yesterday and I got started with the drums. Recording drums is always a time-consuming process, but I had done some prep for the drums already, and managed to get through pretty much half of the songs yesterday.
For this recording I am doing the drums right – first recording them live, but saving them as MIDI into the computer and then separating them out onto a bunch of separate audio tracks as opposed to a general mix, which I have done before – this gives me the opportunity to properly mix each of the separate drums. This has already made the drums sound much bigger, even in the preliminary working mix.

I also spent some time finishing off some additional prep elements of the general recording – getting some guitars re-strung, re-stringing a bass guitar (not the faint hearted, I can assure you) and getting the main project for the recording all set up. I also spent some time getting mics, and other studio set-up fixed up. I think the studio is in good shape, which bodes well, considering I am locked in here all day and all evening for the next five days.

Unfortunately, today was a bit of a set-back in terms of getting into the studio, as I had to tend to some other things, but I am in here now continuing to work on the drum tracks, and I want to get the majority of the existing drum tracks completed before I hit the hay. So, a busy night of drumming ahead for me! Stay tuned to the Twitter Feed for updates!

Great looking drumset! what software do you use to process it and mix it? (any recommendations on beer welcome, too
Jono, are you using Ubuntu Studio for this project? Please don’t tell me you’re using proprietary tools…
